Always the Ideal beckoned from afar. 1
Awakened by the touch of the Unseen, 2
Deserting the boundary of things achieved, 3
Aspired the strong discoverer, tireless Thought, 4
Revealing at each step a luminous world. 5
It left known summits for the unknown peaks: 6
Impassioned, it sought the lone unrealised Truth, 7
It longed for the Light that knows not death and birth. 8
Each stage of the soul's remote ascent was built 9
Into a constant heaven felt always here. 10
At each pace of the journey marvellous 11
A new degree of wonder and of bliss, 12
A new rung formed in Being's mighty stair, 13
A great wide step trembling with jewelled fire 14
As if a burning spirit quivered there 15
Upholding with his flame the immortal hope, 16
As if a radiant God had given his soul 17
That he might feel the tread of pilgrim feet 18
Mounting in haste to the Eternal's house. 19
At either end of each effulgent stair 20
The heavens of the ideal Mind were seen 21
In a blue lucency of dreaming Space 22
Like strips of brilliant sky clinging to the moon. 23
On one side glimmered hue on floating hue, 24
A glory of sunrise breaking on the soul, 25
In a tremulous rapture of the heart's insight 26
And the spontaneous bliss that beauty gives, 27
The lovely kingdoms of the deathless Rose. 28
Above the spirit cased in mortal sense 29
Are superconscious realms of heavenly peace, 30
Below, the Inconscient's sullen dim abyss, 31
Between, behind our life, the deathless Rose. 32
Across the covert air the spirit breathes, 33
A body of the cosmic beauty and joy 34
Unseen, unguessed by the blind suffering world, 35
Climbing from Nature's deep surrendered heart 36
It blooms for ever at the feet of God, 37
Fed by life's sacrificial mysteries. 38
Here too its bud is born in human breasts; 39
Then by a touch, a presence or a voice 40
The world is turned into a temple ground 41
And all discloses the unknown Beloved. 42
In an outburst of heavenly joy and ease 43
Life yields to the divinity within 44
And gives the rapture-offering of its all, 45
And the soul opens to felicity. 46
A bliss is felt that never can wholly cease, 47
A sudden mystery of secret Grace 48
Flowers goldening our earth of red desire. 49
All the high gods who hid their visages 50
From the soiled passionate ritual of our hopes, 51
Reveal their names and their undying powers. 52
A fiery stillness wakes the slumbering cells, 53
A passion of the flesh becoming spirit, 54
And marvellously is fulfilled at last 55
The miracle for which our life was made. 56
A flame in a white voiceless cupola 57
Is seen and faces of immortal light, 58
The radiant limbs that know not birth and death, 59
The breasts that suckle the first-born of the Sun, 60
The wings that crowd thought's ardent silences, 61
The eyes that look into spiritual Space. 62
Our hidden centres of celestial force 63
Open like flowers to a heavenly atmosphere; 64
Mind pauses thrilled with the supernal Ray, 65
And even this transient body then can feel 66
Ideal love and flawless happiness 67
And laughter of the heart's sweetness and delight 68
Freed from the rude and tragic hold of Time, 69
And beauty and the rhythmic feet of the hours. 70
This in high realms touches immortal kind; 71
What here is in the bud has blossomed there. 72
There is the secrecy of the House of Flame, 73
The blaze of godlike thought and golden bliss, 74
The rapt idealism of heavenly sense; 75
There are the wonderful voices, the sun-laugh, 76
A gurgling eddy in rivers of God's joy, 77
And the mysteried vineyards of the gold moon-wine, 78
All the fire and sweetness of which hardly here 79
A brilliant shadow visits mortal life. 80
Although are witnessed there the joys of Time, 81
Pressed on the bosom the Immortal's touch is felt, 82
Heard are the flutings of the Infinite. 83
Here upon earth are early awakenings, 84
Moments that tremble in an air divine, 85
And grown upon the yearning of her soil 86
Time's sun-flowers' gaze at gold Eternity: 87
There are the imperishable beatitudes. 88
A million lotuses swaying on one stem, 89
World after coloured and ecstatic world 90
Climbs towards some far unseen epiphany. 91
On the other side of the eternal stairs 92
The mighty kingdoms of the deathless Flame 93
Aspired to reach the Being's absolutes. 94
Out of the sorrow and darkness of the world, 95
Out of the depths where life and thought are tombed, 96
Lonely mounts up to heaven the deathless Flame. 97
In a veiled Nature's hallowed secrecies 98
It burns for ever on the altar Mind, 99
Its priests the souls of dedicated gods, 100
Humanity its house of sacrifice. 101
Once kindled, never can its flamings cease. 102
A fire along the mystic paths of earth, 103
It rises through the mortal's hemisphere, 104
Till borne by runners of the Day and Dusk 105
It enters the occult eternal Light 106
And clambers whitening to the invisible Throne. 107
Its worlds are steps of an ascending Force: 108
A dream of giant contours, titan lines, 109
Homes of unfallen and illumined Might, 110
Heavens of unchanging Good pure and unborn, 111
Heights of the grandeur of Truth's ageless ray, 112
As in a symbol sky they start to view 113
And call our souls into a vaster air. 114
On their summits they bear up the sleepless Flame; 115
Dreaming of a mysterious Beyond, 116
Transcendent of the paths of Fate and Time, 117
They point above themselves with index peaks 118
Through a pale-sapphire ether of god-mind 119
Towards some gold Infinite's apocalypse. 120
A thunder rolling mid the hills of God, 121
Tireless, severe is their tremendous Voice: 122
Exceeding us, to exceed ourselves they call 123
And bid us rise incessantly above. 124
Far from our eager reach those summits live, 125
Too lofty for our mortal strength and height, 126
Hardly in a dire ecstasy of toil 127
Climbed by the spirit's naked athlete will. 128
Austere, intolerant they claim from us 129
Efforts too lasting for our mortal nerve 130
Our hearts cannot cleave to nor our flesh support; 131
Only the Eternal's strength in us can dare 132
To attempt the immense adventure of that climb 133
And the sacrifice of all we cherish here. 134
Our human knowledge is a candle burnt 135
On a dim altar to a sun-vast Truth; 136
Man's virtue, a coarse-spun ill-fitting dress, 137
Apparels wooden images of Good; 138
Passionate and blinded, bleeding, stained with mire 139
His energy stumbles towards a deathless Force. 140
An imperfection dogs our highest strength; 141
Portions and pale reflections are our share. 142
Happy the worlds that have not felt our fall, 143
Where Will is one with Truth and Good with Power; 144
Impoverished not by earth-mind's indigence, 145
They keep God's natural breath of mightiness, 146
His bare spontaneous swift intensities; 147
There is his great transparent mirror, Self, 148
And there his sovereign autarchy of bliss 149
In which immortal natures have their part, 150
Heirs and cosharers of divinity. 151
He through the Ideal's kingdoms moved at will, 152
Accepted their beauty and their greatness bore, 153
Partook of the glories of their wonder fields, 154
But passed nor stayed beneath their splendour's rule. 155
All there was an intense but partial light. 156
In each a seraph-winged high-browed Idea 157
United all knowledge by one master thought, 158
Persuaded all action to one golden sense, 159
All powers subjected to a single power 160
And made a world where it could reign alone, 161
An absolute ideal's perfect home. 162
Insignia of their victory and their faith, 163
They offered to the Traveller at their gates 164
A quenchless flame or an unfading flower, 165
Emblem of a high kingdom's privilege. 166
A glorious shining Angel of the Way 167
Presented to the seeking of the soul 168
The sweetness and the might of an idea, 169
Each deemed Truth's intimate fount and summit force, 170
The heart of the meaning of the universe, 171
Perfection's key, passport to Paradise. 172
Yet were there regions where these absolutes met 173
And made a circle of bliss with married hands; 174
Light stood embraced by light, fire wedded fire, 175
But none in the other would his body lose 176
To find his soul in the world's single Soul, 177
A multiplied rapture of infinity. 178
Onward he passed to a diviner sphere: 179
There, joined in a common greatness, light and bliss, 180
All high and beautiful and desirable powers 181
Forgetting their difference and their separate reign 182
Become a single multitudinous whole. 183
Above the parting of the roads of Time, 184
Above the Silence and its thousandfold Word, 185
In the immutable and inviolate Truth 186
For ever united and inseparable, 187
The radiant children of Eternity dwell 188
On the wide spirit height where all are one. 189
