ID English Deutsch Zeile
There ceased the limits of the labouring Power. 1
But being and creation cease not there. 2
For Thought transcends the circles of mortal mind, 3
It is greater than its earthly instrument: 4
The godhead crammed into mind's narrow space 5
Escapes on every side into some vast 6
That is a passage to infinity. 7
It moves eternal in the spirit's field, 8
A runner towards the far spiritual light, 9
A child and servant of the spirit's force. 10
But mind too falls back from a nameless peak. 11
His being stretched beyond the sight of Thought. 12
For the spirit is eternal and unmade 13
And not by thinking was its greatness born, 14
And not by thinking can its knowledge come. 15
It knows itself and in itself it lives, 16
It moves where no thought is nor any form. 17
Its feet are steadied upon finite things, 18
Its wings can dare to cross the Infinite. 19
Arriving into his ken a wonder space 20
Of great and marvellous meetings called his steps, 21
Where Thought leaned on a Vision beyond thought 22
And shaped a world from the Unthinkable. 23
On peaks imagination cannot tread, 24
In the horizons of a tireless sight, 25
Under a blue veil of eternity 26
The splendours of ideal Mind were seen 27
Outstretched across the boundaries of things known. 28
Origin of the little that we are, 29
Instinct with the endless more that we must be, 30
A prop of all that human strength enacts, 31
Creator of hopes by earth unrealised, 32
It spreads beyond the expanding universe; 33
It wings beyond the boundaries of Dream, 34
It overtops the ceiling of life's soar. 35
Awake in a luminous sphere unbound by Thought, 36
Exposed to omniscient immensities, 37
It casts on our world its great crowned influences, 38
Its speed that outstrips the ambling of the hours, 39
Its force that strides invincibly through Time, 40
Its mights that bridge the gulf twixt man and God, 41
Its lights that combat Ignorance and Death. 42
In its vast ambit of ideal Space 43
Where beauty and mightiness walk hand in hand, 44
The Spirit's truths take form as living Gods 45
And each can build a world in its own right. 46
In an air which doubt and error cannot mark 47
With the stigmata of their deformity, 48
In communion with the musing privacy 49
Of a truth that sees in an unerring light 50
Where the sight falters not nor wanders thought, 51
Exempt from our world's exorbitant tax of tears, 52
Dreaming its luminous creations gaze 53
On the Ideas that people eternity. 54
In a sun-blaze of joy and absolute power 55
Above the Masters of the Ideal throne 56
In sessions of secure felicity, 57
In regions of illumined certitude. 58
Far are those realms from our labour and yearning and call, 59
Perfection's reign and hallowed sanctuary 60
Closed to the uncertain thoughts of human mind, 61
Remote from the turbid tread of mortal life. 62
But since our secret selves are next of kin, 63
A breath of unattained divinity 64
Visits the imperfect earth on which we toil; 65
Across a gleaming ether's golden laugh 66
A light falls on our vexed unsatisfied lives, 67
A thought comes down from the ideal worlds 68
And moves us to new-model even here 69
Some image of their greatness and appeal 70
And wonder beyond the ken of mortal hope. 71
Amid the heavy sameness of the days 72
And contradicted by the human law, 73
A faith in things that are not and must be 74
Lives comrade of this world's delight and pain, 75
The child of the secret soul's forbidden desire 76
Born of its amour with eternity. 77
Our spirits break free from their environment; 78
The future brings its face of miracle near, 79
Its godhead looks at us with present eyes; 80
Acts deemed impossible grow natural; 81
We feel the hero's immortality; 82
The courage and the strength death cannot touch 83
Awake in limbs that are mortal, hearts that fail; 84
We move by the rapid impulse of a will 85
That scorns the tardy trudge of mortal time. 86
These promptings come not from an alien sphere: 87
Ourselves are citizens of that mother State, 88
Adventurers, we have colonised Matter's night. 89
But now our rights are barred, our passports void; 90
We live self-exiled from our heavenlier home. 91
An errant ray from the immortal Mind 92
Accepted the earth's blindness and became 93
Our human thought, servant of Ignorance. 94
An exile, labourer on this unsure globe 95
Captured and driven in Life's nescient grasp, 96
Hampered by obscure cell and treacherous nerve, 97
It dreams of happier states and nobler powers, 98
The natural privilege of unfallen gods, 99
Recalling still its old lost sovereignty. 100
Amidst earth's mist and fog and mud and stone 101
It still remembers its exalted sphere 102
And the high city of its splendid birth. 103
A memory steals in from lost heavens of Truth, 104
A wide release comes near, a Glory calls, 105
A might looks out, an estranged felicity. 106
In glamorous passages of half-veiled light 107
Wandering, a brilliant shadow of itself, 108
This quick uncertain leader of blind gods, 109
This tender of small lamps, this minister serf 110
Hired by a mind and body for earth-use 111
Forgets its work mid crude realities; 112
It recovers its renounced imperial right, 113
It wears once more a purple robe of thought 114
And knows itself the Ideal's seer and king, 115
Communicant and prophet of the Unborn, 116
Heir to delight and immortality. 117
All things are real that here are only dreams, 118
In our unknown depths sleeps their reserve of truth, 119
On our unreached heights they reign and come to us 120
In thought and muse trailing their robes of light. 121
But our dwarf will and cold pragmatic sense 122
Admit not the celestial visitants: 123
Awaiting us on the Ideal's peaks 124
Or guarded in our secret self unseen 125
Yet flashed sometimes across the awakened soul, 126
Hide from our lives their greatness, beauty, power. 127
Our present feels sometimes their regal touch, 128
Our future strives towards their luminous thrones: 129
Out of spiritual secrecy they gaze, 130
Immortal footfalls in mind's corridors sound: 131
Our souls can climb into the shining planes, 132
The breadths from which they came can be our home. 133
His privilege regained of shadowless sight 134
The Thinker entered the immortals' air 135
And drank again his pure and mighty source. 136
Immutable in rhythmic calm and joy 137
He saw, sovereignly free in limitless light, 138
The unfallen planes, the thought-created worlds 139
Where Knowledge is the leader of the act 140
And Matter is of thinking substance made, 141
Feeling, a heaven-bird poised on dreaming wings, 142
Answers Truth's call as to a parent's voice, 143
Form luminous leaps from the all-shaping beam 144
And Will is a conscious chariot of the Gods, 145
And Life, a splendour stream of musing Force, 146
Carries the voices of the mystic Suns. 147
A happiness it brings of whispered truth; 148
There runs in its flow honeying the bosom of Space 149
A laughter from the immortal heart of Bliss, 150
And the unfathomed Joy of timelessness, 151
The sound of Wisdom's murmur in the Unknown 152
And the breath of an unseen Infinity. 153
In gleaming clarities of amethyst air 154
The chainless and omnipotent Spirit of Mind 155
Brooded on the blue lotus of the Idea. 156
A gold supernal sun of timeless Truth 157
Poured down the mystery of the eternal Ray 158
Through a silence quivering with the word of Light 159
On an endless ocean of discovery. 160
Far-off he saw the joining hemispheres. 161
On meditation's mounting edge of trance 162
Great stairs of thought climbed up to unborn heights 163
Where Time's last ridges touch eternity's skies 164
And Nature speaks to the spirit's absolute. 165
A triple realm of ordered thought came first, 166
A small beginning of immense ascent: 167
Above were bright ethereal skies of mind, 168
A packed and endless soar as if sky pressed sky 169
Buttressed against the Void on bastioned light; 170
The highest strove to neighbour eternity, 171
The largest widened into the infinite. 172
But though immortal, mighty and divine, 173
The first realms were close and kin to human mind; 174
Their deities shape our greater thinking's roads, 175
A fragment of their puissance can be ours: 176
These breadths were not too broad for our souls to range, 177
These heights were not too high for human hope. 178
A triple flight led to this triple world. 179
Although abrupt for common strengths to tread, 180
Its upward slope looks down on our earth-poise: 181
On a slant not too precipitously steep 182
One could turn back travelling deep descending lines 183
To commune with the mortal's universe. 184
The mighty wardens of the ascending stair 185
Who intercede with the all-creating Word, 186
There waited for the pilgrim heaven-bound soul; 187
Holding the thousand keys of the Beyond 188
They proffered their knowledge to the climbing mind 189
And filled the life with Thought's immensities. 190
The prophet hierophants of the occult Law, 191
The flame-bright hierarchs of the divine Truth, 192
Interpreters between man's mind and God's, 193
They bring the immortal fire to mortal men. 194
Iridescent, bodying the invisible, 195
The guardians of the Eternal's bright degrees 196
Fronted the Sun in radiant phalanxes. 197
Afar they seemed a symbol imagery, 198
Illumined originals of the shadowy script 199
In which our sight transcribes the ideal Ray, 200
Or icons figuring a mystic Truth, 201
But, nearer, Gods and living Presences. 202
A march of friezes marked the lowest steps; 203
Fantastically ornate and richly small, 204
They had room for the whole meaning of a world, 205
Symbols minute of its perfection's joy, 206
Strange beasts that were Nature's forces made alive 207
And, wakened to the wonder of his role, 208
Man grown an image undefaced of God 209
And objects the fine coin of Beauty's reign; 210
But wide the terrains were those levels serve. 211
In front of the ascending epiphany 212
World-Time's enjoyers, favourites of World-Bliss, 213
The Masters of things actual, lords of the hours, 214
Playmates of youthful Nature and child God, 215
Creators of Matter by hid stress of Mind 216
Whose subtle thoughts support unconscious Life 217
And guide the fantasy of brute events, 218
Stood there, a race of young keen-visioned gods, 219
King-children born on Wisdom's early plane, 220
Taught in her school world-making's mystic play. 221
Archmasons of the eternal Thaumaturge, 222
Moulders and measurers of fragmented Space, 223
They have made their plan of the concealed and known 224
A dwelling-house for the invisible king. 225
Obeying the Eternal's deep command 226
They have built in the material front of things 227
This wide world-kindergarten of young souls 228
Where the infant spirit learns through mind and sense 229
To read the letters of the cosmic script 230
And study the body of the cosmic self 231
And search for the secret meaning of the whole. 232
To all that Spirit conceives they give a mould; 233
Persuading Nature into visible moods 234
They lend a finite shape to infinite things. 235
Each power that leaps from the Unmanifest 236
Leaving the largeness of the Eternal's peace 237
They seized and held by their precisian eye 238
And made a figurante in the cosmic dance. 239
